Nobody has ever been excited by a lanyard. And yet they are among the most effective branded items you can buy, for reasons that have nothing to do with excitement.
THEY GET USED CONSTANTLY
A keyring is touched every single day, usually several times. A lanyard is worn for eight hours at a stretch, at eye level, by somebody who is talking to people.
Very few branded items get that kind of exposure, and almost none of them cost this little.
LANYARDS: WHAT TO GET RIGHT
- Width. 15mm is the practical standard, 20mm or 25mm gives you room for a logo that is actually readable.
- Print method. Screen printing for one or two colours, dye sublimation for full colour or anything detailed.
- Repeat the logo. A lanyard twists. Printing the design repeatedly along its length means something is always facing forward.
- Safety breakaway. Essential for anyone working near machinery, and standard in most workplaces now.
- The clip. Choose the attachment to suit the card holder you are actually using, which sounds obvious and catches people out.
WHERE LANYARDS EARN THEIR KEEP
Staff identification, events, conferences, site visitors and school or club use. At an event in particular, a well branded lanyard means every attendee is carrying your name around the venue all day.
KEYRINGS: WHAT TO GET RIGHT
- Weight. A light plastic keyring feels disposable and gets treated as such. Metal feels like it is worth keeping.
- Size. Too big and it is annoying in a pocket, so it comes off the keys.
- Usefulness. A bottle opener, torch or trolley coin keyring gets kept because it does something.
- Decoration. Engraving on metal lasts indefinitely. Printing wears off a surface that lives in a pocket.
THE TEST THEY HAVE TO PASS
Would someone choose to keep this if it had no branding on it at all? If yes, you have bought a good item. If no, you have bought something that will be thrown away, and it has cost you money either way.
THEY WORK BEST AS PART OF A SET
On their own these are small items. Alongside a bottle, a notebook and a pen in a welcome pack, they turn a handful of objects into something that feels properly put together.
Our everyday branded items page covers how these fit together, and gifting covers the smarter sets.
THE REAL ARGUMENT FOR THEM
Cost per day of visibility. Divide what you paid by the number of days the item stays in use, and lanyards and keyrings beat almost everything else in the catalogue.
