The overseas quote is often lower. That is true, and worth saying plainly before anything else.
What the quote does not show is everything that happens between placing the order and having wearable shirts in your hands.
THE PRICE ON THE SCREEN IS NOT THE PRICE
By the time an overseas order lands, you have added international shipping, import duty, VAT on the total, and a clearing fee. Those regularly add forty to sixty percent, and sometimes more.
Then the rand moves, and the bargain you worked out three weeks ago is no longer a bargain.
SIZING IS NOT THE SAME
This one catches almost everybody. International sizing runs differently to South African sizing, and often smaller. A box of mediums that fit nobody is not a saving.
Locally you can get a sizing set, let your team try the garments on, and then order with confidence.
YOU CANNOT SEE OR FEEL IT FIRST
Fabric weight, collar quality and how a print feels against the skin do not come across in a product photograph. Locally you can hold the sample, wash it, and decide.
We would far rather you reject a sample than receive two hundred shirts you are unhappy with.
TIME IS THE REAL COST
Local turnaround is usually measured in days. Imported orders are measured in weeks, and that is before anything is held up at a port.
If your event date can move, that is an inconvenience. If it cannot, it is a disaster. Most of the panicked calls we take are from people whose overseas order has not arrived.
WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG, SOMEONE ANSWERS
A print in the wrong position on a local order gets sorted out with a phone call and a reprint. The same problem on an imported order means emails across time zones, return shipping that costs more than the goods, and a dispute you will probably lose.
THE MONEY STAYS HERE
Local printing supports local jobs, local suppliers and local businesses. For a lot of South African companies, that is not a sentimental point, it is the same economy their own customers come from.
WHEN OVERSEAS DOES MAKE SENSE
To be fair about it, there are cases. Very large volumes, long lead times, a highly specialised item that is not manufactured here, and no fixed deadline. In those situations the maths can work.
For almost everything else, including staff uniforms, event shirts and branded apparel, local wins on total cost once you count the time.
A FAIR COMPARISON
Next time you have an overseas quote in front of you, add shipping, duty, VAT, the clearing fee and three extra weeks, then compare. Send us the same spec and we will quote it honestly against that.
