An indoor banner used outdoors will not survive its first windy afternoon. It is the most common and most avoidable mistake in event branding.
Here is how to pick the right one.
INDOOR: WHAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Pull-up banners. The workhorse. Roughly 850mm wide, self contained, up in thirty seconds and packed away in its own base. Perfect for foyers, conferences and shop floors.
X-frame banners. Lighter and cheaper, with a lightweight frame behind the print. Easy to carry and ideal when you need several.
Fabric backdrops and pop-up walls. Where you need a photograph taken against your brand, or a stand that feels solid rather than temporary.
Branded tablecloths. Still the most underrated indoor item. A plain trestle table instantly becomes a stand.
OUTDOOR: BUILT FOR WIND AND SUN
Flag and teardrop banners. The right answer for outdoors. They are designed to move with the wind rather than fight it, and they are visible from a long way off.
Branded gazebos. Shelter, branding and a defined space in one item, which is why they work so well at golf days and roadside activations.
PVC banners with eyelets. For fences, scaffolding and railings. Make sure wind slits are included on anything large.
Branded chairs and outdoor tablecloths. The details that make a setup look planned instead of assembled on the morning.
Our display and event branding page shows these in use.
THE MATERIAL DIFFERENCE
- Indoor: lighter PVC or polyester fabric, matt finish so lights do not glare off it, colour tuned for artificial light
- Outdoor: heavier reinforced PVC or knitted polyester, UV stable inks, reinforced hems and stitched edges
Standard indoor inks fade noticeably in South African sun within a single season. UV stable inks are not a luxury here.
WIND IS NOT OPTIONAL
Every outdoor item needs to be weighted or pegged, every time, even on a still morning. Weather changes and a flying gazebo is genuinely dangerous as well as expensive.
Water bag weights, sandbags or ground pegs depending on the surface. Budget for them when you order, not on the day.
DESIGN DIFFERENTLY FOR EACH
Indoors, people are close and have time, so you can use more text and more detail.
Outdoors, people are further away and usually moving. Big logo, very few words, maximum contrast. If it cannot be read at twenty metres, it is not working.
CAN YOU USE ONE SET FOR BOTH?
Partly. Flag banners work indoors in a large venue. Gazebos obviously do not. Pull-up banners can go outdoors only if they are well sheltered and watched.
If your budget forces one choice, buy for outdoors. Outdoor items survive indoors. The reverse is not true.
LOOK AFTER THEM
Dry everything completely before storing, especially fabric. Roll rather than fold where you can. Keep them out of direct sun between events.
Looked after, a good set lasts years. Tell us where your event is and we will specify the right items for it.
